Topic: Do We Share a Language? Communitarism and Its Challenges.
ABSTRACT:
The idea that natural languages are shared by speakers within linguistic communities is often taken for granted. In this paper, I discuss two strategies for demarcating shared languages and the limits of the explanatory role, which the notion of shared language can play if understood via those strategies. The aim of this paper is to show that the variability of linguistic production of speakers, caused by the inferential significance or free pragmatic enrichment of sentences, problematizes the intuitive idea of natural languages as shared.
