ABSTRACT: I will attempt to account for a certain aspect of sense experience, that I will call ‚engaged experience’. I will attempt to outline how a focus on engaged experience can help us to uncover fundamental features of the world given in everyday sense experience, that are often overlooked or disregarded. I will do this by outlining that it is precisely focus on engaged experience that helped two of the most prominent process thinkers of the 20th century, Alfred North Whitehead and Henri Bergson, to arrive at an understanding of reality as processual and dynamic, as reality alive. In Bergson engaged experience is referred to as ‘intuition’ and in Whitehead it is discussed under the label of ‘causal efficacy’, i.e. what Whitehead calls feeling and sympathy. The ultimate aim of this presentation is to argue for the following claim: only engaged experience can provide us with adequate access to what there is, namely the concrete, the temporal and the changing. Following Bergson and Whitehead, I will thus attempt to describe engaged experience as the only medium able to disclose the world in its actual dynamic concreteness, as the only tool able to discover reality alive.
